Lion's Mane Dosage

Lion's Mane Dosage: How Much Per Day, Powder vs. Extract, and What the Trials Used

The Short Answer

Most lion's mane trials used 1 to 3g a day. In older adults with mild cognitive impairment, 3g a day of fruiting-body powder for 16 weeks improved cognitive scores, which fell again 4 weeks after stopping. In healthy young adults, 1.8g a day for 28 days and a single 3g dose of 10:1 extract gave mixed or small results. The longest trial, 49 weeks, used about 1g a day of mycelia in mild Alzheimer's disease. No trial has compared doses against each other, so there is no proven best dose.

Lion's mane dosage is harder to pin down than for most supplements, because the trials used different forms: fruiting-body powder, a 10:1 extract, and mycelium grown on grain. This guide lists the doses that were actually tested in people, what each did, and what that means for choosing a product. For what lion's mane is and how to pick one, see our lion's mane guide; for safety, see lion's mane side effects.

How Much Lion's Mane Per Day?

The trials used 1 to 3g a day. A common starting point is 1g a day of a product that states its form (fruiting body or mycelium) and whether the amount is powder or extract. There is no trial showing that 3g does more than 1g, so more is not proven better.

Lion's Mane Doses Used in the Trials

StudyDose and formResult
30 adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment, 16 weeks (Mori, 2009)3g a day: four 250mg tablets of dry fruiting-body powder, three times a dayHigher cognitive scores than placebo at weeks 8, 12 and 16; scores fell 4 weeks after stopping
Adults, 12 weeks (Saitsu, 2019)Supplement containing fruiting body (dose not given in the abstract)One test (MMSE) improved; two others didn't show a clear difference
Mild Alzheimer's disease, 49 weeks (Li, 2020)Three 350mg capsules a day of erinacine A-enriched mycelia (about 1,050mg)Placebo group's scores fell; lion's mane group's rose on one scale. Small pilot
41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45 (Docherty, 2023)1.8g a day, acute and 28 daysFaster Stroop performance after one dose; trend toward lower stress at 28 days; mixed results
18 healthy adults aged 18 to 35, crossover (Surendran, 2025)3g of 10:1 fruiting-body extract, single doseNo significant overall effect on cognition or mood; better pegboard test at 90 minutes

The strongest results are in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. In healthy younger adults the results are mixed or small Mixed.

Powder vs. Extract vs. Mycelium

FormWhat to check
Fruiting-body powderThe form in the cognitive-impairment trial (3g a day). Compare grams of powder.
Extract (for example 10:1)A 10:1 label means 10 units of mushroom per unit of extract, so 3g of extract is not the same as 3g of powder. The healthy-adult trial used 3g of extract once.
Mycelium on grainThe 49-week trial used a mycelium enriched in erinacine A. It is a different material from fruiting-body powder, so its dose can't be read across.

That is why a milligram figure on one label can't be compared with another until you know the form. Look for the part of the mushroom used and whether the amount is powder or extract.

How Long Until Lion's Mane Works?

In the cognitive-impairment trial, scores were higher from week 8. In healthy young adults, a single dose showed at most task-specific effects, and 28 days showed a trend rather than a clear result. Treat it as something you judge after a couple of months of daily use, and keep expectations modest if your memory is already normal.

What Is the Maximum Dose?

There is no established upper limit in people. The highest daily amount tested in trials was about 3g. A 2025 rat study found no toxicity up to 2,000mg/kg of body weight a day, but animal studies don't set a human limit. See lion's mane side effects for what the trials reported.

Morning or Night?

No trial tested timing. Many people take it in the morning because they associate it with focus, but that is a habit, not a finding. Taking it with food is a reasonable way to reduce stomach upset, which is the most common side effect reported.

Lion's Mane Coffee and Tea

Mushroom coffee often contains far less than a trial dose, and many labels don't say how much lion's mane is in a cup. If a product doesn't list grams of lion's mane per serving, you can't compare it to anything tested.

Who Should Be Careful

  • Avoid it with a mushroom allergy.
  • Check with a doctor if you take medication, have surgery planned, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Those groups haven't been studied.
  • Long-term daily use in healthy people hasn't been studied.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much lion's mane should I take per day?

Trials used 1 to 3g a day. A common start is 1g of a product that states its form and whether the amount is powder or extract. No trial shows 3g works better than 1g.

What is the best lion's mane dosage for memory?

The clearest result is in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, who took 3g a day of fruiting-body powder for 16 weeks. In healthy young adults results were mixed, so no best dose is proven.

Is 3g of lion's mane too much?

3g a day is the highest daily amount used in trials and was reported without adverse effects in the cognitive-impairment study. It isn't an established limit, and nothing is known about long-term use.

How long does lion's mane take to work?

In the mild cognitive impairment trial, scores were higher from week 8. In healthy young adults a single dose showed at most task-specific effects, and 28 days showed a trend.

Is lion's mane extract stronger than powder?

A 10:1 extract is concentrated, so a gram of it represents more mushroom than a gram of powder. That is why you can't compare milligrams across forms without checking the label.

Should I take lion's mane in the morning or at night?

No trial tested timing. Taking it with food may reduce stomach upset, which is the most commonly reported side effect.

Can you take lion's mane every day?

Trials gave it daily for up to 49 weeks with mild side effects reported. Long-term daily use in healthy people hasn't been studied.

How much lion's mane is in mushroom coffee?

It varies and many labels don't say. If the product doesn't list grams of lion's mane per serving, you can't compare it to a trial dose.

The Evidence

Established replicated in several controlled human trials or a review. Preliminary small, short, or single studies. Mixed studies disagree. Not supported so far tested and not shown to work.

  1. Mori et al., 2009, Phytotherapy Research. 30 Japanese adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment; four 250mg tablets of 96% Yamabushitake dry powder three times a day for 16 weeks vs. placebo. Higher cognitive scores at weeks 8, 12 and 16; scores fell significantly 4 weeks after stopping; no adverse effects on laboratory tests.
  2. Saitsu et al., 2019, Biomedical Research. Randomized, double-blind trial of supplements containing H. erinaceus fruiting body for 12 weeks. Of three cognitive tests (MMSE, Benton visual retention, verbal paired-associate learning), MMSE alone showed significant improvement. Dose not stated in the abstract.
