L-Theanine Dosage

L-Theanine Dosage: How Much Per Day, the Maximum Dose, and What 800mg Means

The Short Answer

Most people take 100–400mg of L-theanine a day, usually 200mg once. Trials that found benefits used 200mg a day for 4 weeks, and a systematic review of nine trials concluded 200–400mg a day may help with stress. The highest dose tested was 900mg a day for 8 weeks, in adults with generalized anxiety disorder, where it did no better than placebo. 800mg sits inside the tested range but isn't shown to work better than 200mg; 1,000mg is beyond anything tested.

L-Theanine dosage questions come in a few flavors: how much to take, what the maximum is, and whether 800mg or 1,000mg is too much. The trials give clearer answers to the first than the last. This guide lists the doses that have been tested in people, what each did, and how to turn that into a sensible number. For what L-Theanine is and how to pick a product, see our L-Theanine guide.

L-Theanine Doses Used in the Trials

StudyDoseResult
35 young adults, single dose50mgMore alpha brain-wave activity than placebo (conference abstract)
12 adults, single dose100mgPeak blood level about 0.8 hours after, same from a capsule as from green tea
44 young adults, single dose97mg with 40mg caffeineBetter task-switching accuracy and alertness than placebo
30 healthy adults, 4 weeks200mg a dayBetter stress, anxiety and sleep scores (two authors worked for the tablet supplier)
48 adults, single dose200mg with 250mg caffeineBlunted caffeine's blood-pressure rise; no significant effect on jitteriness
Adults, crossover, single dose250mg with 150mg caffeineBetter reaction time and accuracy; 250mg alone raised headache ratings
98 boys with ADHD, 6 weeks400mg a day, split between breakfast and after schoolBetter sleep efficiency; no significant adverse events
46 adults with generalized anxiety disorder, 8 weeks450–900mg a dayNo better than placebo for anxiety

One systematic review of nine randomized trials concluded that 200–400mg a day "may assist" with stress and anxiety under stressful conditions, and called for larger, longer studies Preliminary.

How Much L-Theanine Per Day, by Goal

GoalDose from the studiesNote
Smoother coffee100–200mg with your caffeineMost caffeine trials used about 100mg of L-theanine with 40–50mg of caffeine
Everyday stress200mg once a dayThe 4-week trial used 200mg daily
Situational calm200mg, 30–60 minutes beforehandPeak blood level comes about 50 minutes after a capsule
Sleep quality200–400mg a dayTrials gave it daily, not as a single bedtime dose

Start at 100–200mg and judge it for a few days before raising it. Nothing in the trials shows that going higher improves the effect, and the one trial that used 450–900mg a day found no benefit over placebo.

What Is the Maximum Dose?

The highest dose tested was 900mg a day for 8 weeks, in adults with generalized anxiety disorder who were already on antidepressants. It was well tolerated there. That's a ceiling of what's been studied, not an official safety limit: nobody has tested longer than 8 weeks, and the trials that found benefits used far less. If you're deciding how much is too much, the evidence supports staying within 100–400mg a day.

Is 800mg of L-Theanine a Day Too Much?

800mg is inside the range that was tested (450–900mg a day), but the only people who took that much were adults with an anxiety disorder, it was added to their medication, and it didn't beat placebo Not supported so far. There's no trial showing 800mg works better than 200mg for stress or sleep. If 200mg doesn't do much for you, 800mg isn't a proven next step.

What About 1,000mg?

1,000mg a day is above anything in the published trials. That doesn't mean it's harmful, but it means there's no data on how it behaves, so there's no basis for it.

L-Theanine Dosage With Caffeine

With caffeine, most studies used far lower doses than people take: about 100mg of L-theanine with 40–50mg of caffeine, a 2:1 ratio. A pooled analysis found the size of the effect followed the caffeine dose more than the L-theanine dose. For ratios, cups of coffee, and what the trials found, see our caffeine + L-Theanine guide. One small study found tea-level doses (50mg of L-theanine with 75mg of caffeine) cancelled caffeine's benefits, so more isn't always better.

Tea vs. Capsule

A cup of black tea has roughly 20mg of L-theanine, so matching a 100mg dose would take about five cups, with their caffeine. That's why people use capsules or powder for a consistent dose.

Once a Day, or Split?

Most adult trials gave it once a day. The ADHD trial in boys split 400mg between breakfast and after school. It reaches peak blood levels about 50 minutes after a dose, so for a specific moment, take it 30–60 minutes before.

Children and Teens

The only trial in children gave 400mg a day under supervision to boys aged 8–12 with ADHD, for 6 weeks. That's not a basis for dosing a child at home; ask a doctor.

Side Effects and Who Should Be Careful

  • In one trial a 250mg dose raised headache ratings when taken alone.
  • In small studies it blunted rises in blood pressure, so check with a doctor if you take blood pressure medication.
  • If you take sedatives or other calming medications, ask a doctor before adding it.
  • L-Theanine supplements haven't been studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding; see L-Theanine in pregnancy.
  • Long-term daily use beyond 8 weeks hasn't been studied.

If you're combining it with another supplement, see Rhodiola vs. L-Theanine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much L-Theanine should I take per day?

Most people take 100 to 400mg a day, usually 200mg once. Trials that found benefits used 200mg a day for 4 weeks, and a review of nine trials concluded 200 to 400mg a day may help with stress. Start low and judge it for a few days.

What is the maximum dose of L-Theanine?

The highest dose tested was 900mg a day for 8 weeks, in adults with generalized anxiety disorder. That's the ceiling of what's been studied, not an official safety limit, and the trials that found benefits used far less.

Is 800mg of L-Theanine too much?

800mg is within the range tested, but only in adults with an anxiety disorder, where it did no better than placebo. There's no trial showing it works better than 200mg for stress or sleep.

What is a good L-Theanine dose for anxiety?

For everyday stress, small trials used 200mg a day. For diagnosed generalized anxiety disorder, 450 to 900mg a day added to antidepressants did no better than placebo, so it isn't a substitute for treatment.

What dose of L-Theanine should I take with caffeine?

Most studies paired about 100mg of L-theanine with 40 to 50mg of caffeine, a 2:1 ratio. A common practical start is 200mg of L-theanine with about 100mg of caffeine.

How much L-Theanine is in a cup of tea?

About 20mg in a cup of black tea, so matching a 100mg dose takes about five cups.

Can you take L-Theanine every day?

Many people do, and it has been well tolerated in trials of up to 8 weeks, but long-term daily use hasn't been studied. Check with a doctor if you take blood pressure medication or sedatives, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How long does L-Theanine take to work?

It reaches peak levels in the blood about 50 minutes after a dose, so you don't need weeks of daily use to notice it.

The Evidence

Established replicated in several controlled human trials or a review. Preliminary small, short, or single studies. Mixed studies disagree. Not supported so far tested and not shown to work.

  1. Nobre et al., 2008, Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 35 young adults; 50mg L-theanine vs. placebo. Greater increase in alpha brain-wave activity. Conference abstract; notes a cup of black tea has about 20mg theanine. Unilever-funded.
  2. Scheid et al., 2012, Journal of Nutrition. 12 healthy adults; 100mg L-theanine as a capsule or in green tea. Peak blood level about 0.8 hours after intake, the same for both.
  3. Giesbrecht et al., 2010, Nutritional Neuroscience. 44 young adults; 40mg caffeine + 97mg L-theanine vs. placebo, single dose. Better task-switching accuracy and alertness, less tiredness; no effect on other tasks. Unilever-funded.
  4. Hidese et al., 2019, Nutrients. 30 healthy adults (mean age 48); 200mg/day for 4 weeks. Improved stress, depression, anxiety, and sleep scores (including sleep latency) and verbal fluency. Two authors worked for the supplier of the tablets.
  5. Rogers et al., 2008, Psychopharmacology. 48 healthy adults; 250mg caffeine + 200mg theanine, single dose. Theanine blunted caffeine's rise in blood pressure but did not significantly reduce jitteriness, alertness, or other mood effects.
  6. Haskell et al., 2008, Biological Psychology. Healthy adults, crossover; 150mg caffeine + 250mg L-theanine, single dose. The combination improved several reaction-time and accuracy tasks and lowered 'headache' and 'tired' ratings; L-theanine alone raised headache ratings.
  7. Lyon et al., 2011, Alternative Medicine Review. 98 boys aged 8–12 with ADHD; 400mg/day Suntheanine split between breakfast and after school, for 6 weeks. Better sleep efficiency on wrist monitors; time to fall asleep unchanged; no significant adverse events.
  8. Sarris et al., 2019, Journal of Psychiatric Research. 46 adults with generalized anxiety disorder on antidepressants; 450–900mg/day added for 8 weeks. No better than placebo for anxiety or insomnia severity; slightly higher self-rated sleep satisfaction.
  9. Williams et al., 2020, Plant Foods for Human Nutrition (systematic review). 9 randomized trials. Concluded 200–400mg/day "may assist" with stress and anxiety under stressful conditions, and called for larger, longer studies.
  10. Dodd et al., 2015, Psychopharmacology. 24 adults (12 habitual, 12 non-habitual caffeine users); 75mg caffeine + 50mg L-theanine, single dose. Adding theanine eliminated caffeine's cognitive and mood benefits at these tea-level doses.
  11. Camfield et al., 2014, Nutrition Reviews (meta-analysis). 11 randomized trials of single doses. Moderate effects of caffeine + L-theanine on alertness and attention switching in the first 2 hours; the effect tracked caffeine dose more than theanine dose.
