Alpha Brain Review

Alpha Brain Review: Ingredients, Doses, and What the One Published Trial Found

The Short Answer

Alpha Brain is a caffeine-free blend of about a dozen ingredients, most hidden inside three proprietary blends. One published trial of the product exists: in 63 adults aged 18–35, six weeks of Alpha Brain improved delayed verbal recall and one executive-function test more than placebo. Onnit funded it, and it hasn't been repeated. Its Bacopa dose (100mg) is a third of what the Bacopa trials used, and it contains Huperzine A, a drug-like ingredient worth checking with a doctor if you take medication.

Alpha Brain, made by Onnit, is one of the most heavily marketed nootropics in the US. It promises support for memory, focus and mental processing speed. We don't sell Alpha Brain or earn anything from it. We read the current label, checked each ingredient against the research, and looked at the one trial of the product itself. Where we discuss ingredients, the details come from our own evidence-checked guides.

What's in Alpha Brain

This is the label of the standard, caffeine-free capsules as Onnit showed it in October 2026 (serving size 2 capsules):

Line on the labelAmount per servingWhat's inside
Vitamin B610mgPyridoxine HCl
Onnit Flow Blend650mg totalL-Tyrosine, L-Theanine, oat straw extract, phosphatidylserine
Cat's claw bark extract350mgOn its own line
Onnit Focus Blend240mg totalAlpha GPC, Bacopa extract (100mg), toothed clubmoss extract (400mcg Huperzine A)
Onnit Fuel Blend60mg totalL-Leucine, pterostilbene

The Proprietary Blend Problem

A proprietary blend only has to list its total weight, not how much of each ingredient it contains. Alpha Brain discloses three individual amounts inside its blends (Bacopa, Huperzine A, and cat's claw on its own line). For everything else, including L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine, Alpha GPC and phosphatidylserine, you can't tell whether the dose matches anything studied. The 650mg Flow Blend holds four ingredients, so at least some must be well below their usual studied doses.

Ingredient by Ingredient

Bacopa: 100mg, a third of the studied dose

Bacopa has the best memory evidence of anything in the formula Preliminary. But the trials behind it typically used about 300mg a day of an extract standardized for bacosides for 8–12 weeks, with effects building slowly. Alpha Brain's 100mg is a third of that, and the label doesn't state a bacoside percentage. See our Bacopa guide for the trials.

Huperzine A: 400mcg, and drug-like

Huperzine A blocks the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, the same way some prescription Alzheimer's drugs work. That's what Onnit means by "supports acetylcholine levels". It has been studied mainly in people with Alzheimer's disease. In a US trial of 210 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's, 200mcg twice a day didn't improve the main cognitive score at 16 weeks; 400mcg twice a day did better on a secondary analysis Mixed. There's little research on daily use in healthy young adults. Because it acts like a medicine, anyone taking Alzheimer's drugs or other medication that affects acetylcholine should talk to a doctor before taking it.

L-Theanine: amount not disclosed

L-Theanine has decent evidence for calm focus, especially combined with caffeine, usually at 100–200mg Preliminary. Alpha Brain doesn't say how much it contains, and the capsule version has no caffeine. See our caffeine and L-Theanine guide.

The rest

  • Alpha GPC, L-Tyrosine, phosphatidylserine: each has some research for cognition or for performance under stress, but at doses we can't compare because they're hidden in blends.
  • Cat's claw (350mg), oat straw, pterostilbene, L-Leucine: little human research on memory or focus at these doses.
  • Vitamin B6 (10mg): 588% of the daily value. That's well under the 100mg/day upper limit set by the US National Institutes of Health, but worth counting if you take other B-vitamin products.

The Alpha Brain Trial

A PubMed search in October 2026 found one randomized controlled trial of Alpha Brain itself, published in 2016 Preliminary:

  • Design: 63 healthy adults aged 18–35 took Alpha Brain or placebo for 6 weeks, after a 2-week placebo run-in. It was double-blind.
  • Results: compared with placebo, Alpha Brain improved delayed verbal recall (remembering a word list after a delay) and a measure of executive function. The abstract doesn't report improvements on the other tests in the battery.
  • Funding: Onnit funded the study, and coverage of it reported that a co-author was an Onnit employee.
  • The authors' own caveat: they called it the first trial of Alpha Brain and said the results "merit further study". It hasn't been repeated by an independent group.

A single, small, company-funded trial in young adults is a start, not proof. We also can't confirm that the 2016 formula matches today's label.

Cost

At Onnit's October 2026 list price, 60 capsules cost $57.95: 30 servings at the full two-capsule dose, or about $1.93 a day (less with a subscription). Single-ingredient Bacopa or L-Theanine at fully disclosed, research-matched doses usually costs a fraction of that per day.

Who Should Skip It or Ask a Doctor

  • Anyone taking medication, especially Alzheimer's drugs or anything affecting acetylcholine, because of the Huperzine A.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: several ingredients have no safety data in pregnancy.
  • Under-18s: the trial only included adults.
  • Anyone stacking supplements: count the B6, and check for overlap with other products that contain Bacopa, Alpha GPC or Huperzine A.

Our Verdict

Alpha Brain isn't a scam: it contains real ingredients, and it has more direct testing than most nootropic blends, which have none. But that testing is one small trial paid for by the company. The best-researched ingredient (Bacopa) is underdosed compared with the studies, and most other doses are hidden. If you want what the research supports, a standardized Bacopa extract at the studied dose, given 8–12 weeks, or L-Theanine with your morning coffee, gets you closer to the evidence for less money. See our study stack guide for how those fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Alpha Brain actually work?

There's limited evidence. One published trial, funded by Onnit, found six weeks of Alpha Brain improved delayed verbal recall and one executive-function test in 63 young adults compared with placebo. It hasn't been repeated independently.

What's in Alpha Brain?

Per 2-capsule serving: vitamin B6 (10mg), a 650mg blend of L-Tyrosine, L-Theanine, oat straw and phosphatidylserine, cat's claw (350mg), a 240mg blend of Alpha GPC, Bacopa (100mg) and Huperzine A (400mcg), and a 60mg blend of L-Leucine and pterostilbene.

Is Alpha Brain safe?

No serious problems were reported in its trial, but it contains Huperzine A, which works like some prescription Alzheimer's drugs. Anyone on medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, or under 18 should check with a doctor first.

How long does Alpha Brain take to work?

The trial measured results after 6 weeks of daily use. Its Bacopa content, the ingredient with the best memory evidence, typically takes 8 to 12 weeks at higher doses in research.

Does Alpha Brain have caffeine?

The standard capsules are caffeine-free. Onnit sells other versions, such as Black Label, that contain caffeine.

Is Alpha Brain worth the money?

At about $1.93 a day at list price, it costs more than single ingredients at the doses used in research. Its main memory ingredient, Bacopa, is at a third of the studied dose, and most other doses are hidden in proprietary blends.
